INTRODUCTION: Excerpt from below overview post of Global Peace Plan

The Unity and Diversity Council also sponsored the program in Santa Monica in 1978 January (where the initiation of the American Indian Movement's Longest Walk was announced [Feb-July] from San Francisco to Washington) to which was conducted the "Great American Peace Pilgrimage" spiritual peace walk from Santa Barbara to LA to first introduce the followers of Mahatma Gandhi's "Guruji" Nichidatsu Fujii, ie, Guruji's Nipponzan Myohoji monks, Rev. Yoshida, Rev. Nippashi, et al, to Hopi Interpreter Thomas Banyacya.

Leland at that time was aware of Sri Sathya Sai Baba via work with the Reyes' in Ojai. Now Dennis is speaking at this Peace Sunday event on Baba's birthday. Looks like an auspicious occasion and a good one to network about The American Peace March 2003-2004 coming, via Steps for Peace from Philadelphia arriving there Tues.Nov.4 on way to DC and ending SF Feb.29'04, which is inspiring walks like a CA route Jan.15 from Mexico border to walk up through San Diego, Orange County to the Sathya Sai USA Bookstore, through Los Angeles, San Fernando Valley, Ventura, Santa Barbara on Banyacya's death day anniversary shared with the birthday of Ronald Reagan and Bob Marley February 6th, through Buellton, San Luis Obispso, Morro Bay, Big Sur, Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Jose, and joining Jonathan's route in San Francisco for last day walking Feb.29 to UN Plaza.

These two sponsoring groups (UDC and Agape) also hosted the Hiroshima Flame at a Peace Sunday before the Hiroshima Flame walk went on its USA journey carrying this flame from the embers of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima made into a prayer.

The Peace Sunday in 1982 with similar groups backing was in June, after which some peace walkers went to NYC to join end of the World Peace March to the United Nations Second Special Session on Disarmament after convergence of the five cross country routes of that walk originating over a year earlier in Japan, initiated by Fujii Guruji after the second International Conference of Religious Workers convened to manifest UN SSD I & II, peace walking around the world and ending with a million people in Central Park gathered for peace. http://www.peacepagoda.org

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, has inspired a now-21-year-old-since-NYC admirable example of our youth, Iowa university religious studies graduate and track and field athlete Jonathan Meier, to initiate, lead, and conduct, with administrative help from the Dennis Kucinich for President Campaign, this spiritual peace walk to unite all peoples in what he calls the grand cause of global peace by walking as a prayer to develop a culture of love. http://www.kucinich.us/walkfordennis/itinerary.php

"There's been a lot buzz on the internet lately regarding a significant planetary line-up in the sky that is happening on November 8. It's been given the name, Harmonic Concordance. I checked out the astrological alignment for that day, and sure enough: during the eclipse of the moon, there will be a Star of David configuration in the skies created by aspects to the Moon, Sun, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and Chiron. In addition, those planets will preside in Scorpio, Taurus, Virgo, Pices, Cancer, and Capricorn. That's quite a mix. This is a major harmonious configuration."

Subject: Requesting Ms. Coretta Scott King's press statement and
Steps for Peace Walk participation [excerpt:]

...bringing out the prayer for "Global Peace Now!" as the universal human resolve by supporting a young man now walking for peace across America.

By initiating the Global Peace Walk to bring out this prayer by all of humanity on Dr. King's 1995 birthday, it will forever carry the theme of that day as you expressed in your letter, of "Kingian Nonviolence in Action: Empowering Future Generations to Serve."

Just now we are finally succeeding in doing this by offering our support to help Jonathan Meier walking across America as a prayer for peace, as he said in his October 17, 2003, walk start speech, "Last December and January, I walked from Ames, Iowa, to Washington, D.C. for global peace. The message that I carried with me on that walk is the same message that I present to you now -- It is time for us to create a culture firmly rooted in love. Every step that I take while on this journey will be a prayer for humanity. Today, I begin my walk across the country to say that humanity is ready to create a culture of peace -- that we no longer need violence, fear, and destruction to show us that the way of love and forgiveness is the best path. I am walking to let people know that now is the time for us to act. This is the moment that will change the course of history, because this is the moment that people decided to come together for one grand cause -- the cause of global peace." [excerpts from his whole formal "walk start" speech at]
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/american-peace-march/message/2

"I know from experience that this type of action is one of the most effective things one can do to get one's point across. Gandhi, Cesar Chavez, Martin Luther King, Jr -- all of these great leaders used pilgrimmage as part of their message," he said in his 11:59 pm Sepember 11, 2003, proposal for this walk across America, inspired to do this as a way to support this favorite presidential candidate Rep. Dennis Kucinich whose supporters and campaign responded so well and quickly to this spiritual offering that the walk started Oct.17

Press Release

Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich To Give Keynote Address and Receive "Heart of Humanity" Award at Peace Sunday at Agape Spiritual Center, Sunday November 23rd Annual Multi-Denominational Event

For Immediate Release: October 29, 2003

2004 Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich will be the keynote speaker at the 6th annual Peace Sunday event in Los Angeles. Noted for his proactive stance on Peace issues including his leadership of the Progressive Caucus in the house, which he used to have 126 Reps vote against Bush's Iraq adventure. He is also well known for his platform plank of starting a cabinet level Department of Peace.

The first candidate to come out as an outspoken critic of Bush's war policies, Kucinich has been hailed as the Peace Candidate by the many activist groups. At Peace Sunday, he will receive their "Heart of Humanity" Award that has been given to such notables as Dr. Robert Muller of the United Nations, and the Dalai Lama.

Peace Sunday is an annual event started by Leland Stewart, founder of the Unity-and-Diversity World Council, Tahdi Blackstone of the Institute of Noetic Sciences ~ Los Angeles, and Rev. Dr. Michael Beckwith, Founder and spiritual director of Agape International Spiritual Center. In addition to Kucinich's keynote and award, this year's event will feature terrific music with the Agape International choir and the Palisadians Interfaith Chorus, and a moving ceremony in which 15 different religions all light a candle under one roof in the name of peace. There will be numerous workshops and seminars from internationally known presenters including: activists Kristal Parks, Danny Sheehan, Hector Aristizabal, Albert Cohen, Patrick Harbula; healers Cynthia Bissonnette, Stephen Pike and singer Stephen Longfellow Fiske and many others. Additionally there will be booths and tables for different organizations and religions to bring their information and gifts to sell.

The hilarious, delightful (and tasteful) New Age Spoof, Swami Beyondananda, will MC the event.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Your check (made payable to Peace Sunday) should be sent to P.O. Box 661401, Los Angeles 90066-9201 and will be your receipt.

Meet the Walkers

Last Updated on Sunday, November 2, 2003 12:58 PM

Joining in NYC - Clara Wilson

Clara is a massage therapist from Lexington, KY. Her hobbies include piano, dance and hiking. "Dennis is the best president we could have. He cares about working people, he respects and protects the environment and he's the only candidate with a plan for peace. My participation in the coast to coast walk for Dennis is the most effective thing I can do to bring his vision for a better America to people throughout the country."

Joining in Manhattan - Tom Schmitz - Age 48

Born in North Platte, Nebraska Raised in Cincinnati, Ohio Tom is a recovering management consultant whose career has spanned over twenty years in the United States and Asia. He has spent the last year in Lexington, Kentucky, actively involved in three grass roots campaigns: Lexington Living Wage Campaign, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth (a statewide multi-issue grass roots progressive organization), and the Lexington Network (an organization that sponsors anti-racist popular education).

Tak Schmitz - Age 14

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio Raised in both US and Japan An outspoken anti-racist, Tak has day-to-day involvement following and discussing issues regarding world peace, Iraq, and Living Wage. He wants to keep a daily journal and write a book about his experience on the road. He wants the book titled, "Coast to Coast for Dennis Kucinich".

Tak and Tom will be doing home schooling along the way. This alone will be an adventure for both of them, but they are confident that Tak will have the most unforgettable educational experience of his lifetime.

Walk Initiator

Jonathan Meier - Age 21

Jonathan has a bachelor's degree in Religious Studies with a minor in Philosophy from Iowa State University. Originally from Spring Valley, Minnesota, Jonathan has been living in Ames, Iowa. Gandhi, Dr. King, Cesar Chavez, Congressman John Lewis, Senator Paul Wellstone, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Thomas Merton have all had a great impact on Jonathan's life, and have helped shape his ideologies and philosophy. Jonathan walked from Ames, Iowa to Washington, D.C. in January 2003 in protest of the war on Iraq.

To find out more about this walk, click here. http://www.kucinich.us/walkfordennis

"After my peace walk last year, I realized that walking is an effective means of drawing awareness to an issue. The act of walking across the country tends to form communities where there were none before; the walker is forced into an intimate setting with the people s/he meets, for every person one comes into contact with while walking is a person who, literally, has the power to save the walker's life. I could not have completed my walk last year (actually, I couldn't have made it out of Ames) without the help of every person I came into contact with. The people I met on the road offered me food, shelter, rest, donations-- everything I needed to survive. This brought us close together and caused us to open up to each other (a necessary step in creating peace).

"Using this experience, I realized that this type of action is exactly what the Kucinich campaign needs: we need to draw awareness to all of the positive steps that Dennis will take once elected, and we need to develop a sense of community throughout the U.S., where people will open up to each other (letting go of their fears) and treat each other as brothers and sisters instead of as strangers and "potential terrorists". I realize that we cannot make Dennis' campaign ideas work unless we simultaneously create an atmosphere where these ideas will flourish. "I also realized that one or two individuals walking across the country will not create much of a community. That is why we need a nation-wide campaign -- one where Kucinich supporters in every village, town, and city will walk everywhere they go (or, at least, most places they go), all the while displaying a button/t-shirt that says, "I'm Walking for Dennis Kucinich." This will arouse curiosity and will, I think, bring others to us (instead of the traditional method of sending supporters out to the people). "We must try to stray away from impersonal means of communication (phone calls, letters, emails, etc.) and concentrate on developing relationships -- sincere relationships -- with the people around us. I feel this campaign will do just that." [quotes Jonathan]
